The Malabar Hookah, crafted by the Moosari coppersmith community, has been the pride of Koyilandy for centuries. It owes its inception to a group of Yemeni merchants, who arrived at Koyilandy, a town in Kerala, approximately 500 years ago. The floridly designed Hookahs impressed the merchants, with its water holder made from a coconut shell. They commissioned its production and from a long time, the Malabar Hookah has been a highly coveted object - its popularity racing throughout northern India as well as in parts of Pakistan and the Middle East.
